Drawings from the Motion Picture - Valley of the Dolls, both the novel by Jacqueline Susan, and the utlra-campy movie based off of Susan's novel, is one of my favorite stories. The book is a trash classic, with some very poignent attempts at the realities facing working women in the 1960s and '70s. Of course, it was written in a way that completely undermined everything Susan tried to communicate. But that's beside the point really.The movie, on the other hand, presents women as weak, stupid, and greedy little shrews. In Susan's novel the women, though they make some pretty bad life decisions, are completely independent and competitive with men on their own terms. In the movie all they do is cat-fight and pop pills. I find the movie utterly hilarious, and an apt example of Hollywood's need to further stereotypes even against the populist sentiment.
